The summer after my freshman year in college I had the privilege and honor to work as an intern at the National Museum of the American Sailor in Great Lakes, Illinois.
The mission of the National Museum of the American Sailor (also known as the Great Lakes Naval Museum) is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of the United States Navy’s Enlisted Sailor for the benefit of the US. Navy and the people of the United States.
The National Museum of the American Sailor is a congressionally funded museum that:
•Serves as an important part in training Navy recruits about the heritage of the U.S. Navy and connecting them with the Navy’s long tradition of honor, courage, and commitment.
•Collects and presents United States Naval history in an accurate, complete and unbiased manner.
•Preserves the physical legacy and historical experiences of the Navy’s enlisted sailor for the benefit of the United States Navy and the general public.
•Creates strategies and policies for the selection and acquisition of historical material to preserve the history of the U.S. Naval history.
•Develope educational programs and exhibits that broaden and deepen public knowledge and appreciation of the significance of the U. S. Sailor.

Navy Tails
While I was interning the museum had a wonderful exhibit called Navy Tails that featured the important role that working animals like dogs, birds and even goats played in the U.S. Navy over the years.
